SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND - WORLD WAR II 1940’S WAR-TIME WEEKEND on Saturday 12 & Sunday 13 May 2012 at the Tower Museum, Bassingbourn Airfield, Cambridgeshire, England. Bassingbourn is holding a 1940’s WWII War-Time Weekend … ”Somewhere in England”. The aim of this event is to raise much needed funds towards the restoration of the Control Tower Museum, Bassingbourn – a memorial museum to all those airmen of the RAF and USAAF who served and gave their lives in defence of our freedom during WWII. During WWII Bassingbourn was a Royal Air Force Station housing first, men of Bomber Command, whom whilst stationed at Bassingbourn lost some 200 men before, in 1942, being handed over to the 91st Bombardment Group (Heavy) of the United States Army Air Corps. It was from Bassingbourn, and from this Group (91st BG) that such planes as the “Memphis Belle”, “Nine’O’ Nine” and “Shoo Shoo Baby” flew their missions. This group had the highest casualty rate of any of the heavy bomber groups within the Eighth Air Force. The Museum’s one true aim is: “TO KEEP THE MEMORY ALIVE FOR THOSE WHO COME AFTER" Sadly, the Control Tower building is now in urgent need of a complete restoration, and the Team at the Tower are going to undertake the task of raising the funds needed to preserve and protect this piece of national and international heritage. We are looking for …. WWII Allied Forces Living History Groups WWII and 1940’s military and civilian vehicles … and any other Living History Groups that portray life during WWII. For those wishing to support this event, it will be a unique opportunity to soak up the atmosphere at this historic site, which played such a vital role in World War II. For further details and to register your interest in attending and supporting this event, please email the organisers at somewhereinengland@hotmail.co.uk or telephone 01763 243 500 (answer phone – we will call you back within 24hrs).
